History of IKEA
IKEA is a privately owned company that designs and sells home furniture and other home accessories. Most of these items are sold ready to assemble for example beds and chairs. The company was founded by Ingvar Kamprad from Sweden but it has expanded to many countries now like UK, France, Italy and USA among others. Their prices are relatively low and therefore it’s a very good place to shop for people with tight financial budgets.
Ingvar Kamprad always wanted to be a businessman since he was a small boy and he started selling things like matches, flower seeds, greeting cards, Christmas gifts and tree decorations. After some few years, he turned his business into a store that retailed furniture where he started to explore different furniture designs and how they could be assembled. Kamprad then found a way of advertising his products to the people using a catalog& showroom and IKEA started taking shape.
After some few years, IKEA was then established in other countries outside Sweden and more new products were added to their already long list of home products. By 1990, the company was now stable and children’s IKEA was introduced where its main focus was to offer home furniture solutions for families with children. In the year 2000, the company opened more stores in countries like Japan and Russia. This year also saw the launch of IKEA way of purchasing Home Furnishing Products that defines what the suppliers should expect from IKEA and what IKEA would expect from the suppliers.
In 2001, E-shopping was launched in Sweden and Denmark where the customers could shop online. This later spread to other shops located in other countries. Between 2002 and 2007, many changes had happened to IKEA. They introduced their own rail operations to transport their materials and products between the different countries where their stores were located. This also saw the start of IKEA recovery which ensured returned products could be repaired instead of being wasted. The company also expanded to offering kitchen solutions by offering a wide range of dining and kitchen furniture. IKEA food was also launched in this period to offer food products.
In summary, IKEA has gone through so many changes to be what it is today. It’s very easy to locate an IKEA store near you for the best quality of furniture at affordable prices since this information is readily available online. They also offer some services like home delivery, assembly and installation, home or office planning among others to their customers.
